Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
