Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
