Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
